ICE releases new guidelines for international college students not attending on campus.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released new guidelines this week for international students residing in the U.S. while taking college classes. The new rules state that students are not allowed to remain in the country if they are only taking classes online and not in person. These changes come as many schools are unlikely to return to in-person classes in the fall due to the continued spread of COVID-19.
ICE also stated that new visas would not be offered to students attending schools that would be offering their courses online. The rules say that students should “depart the country or take other measures, such as transferring to a school with in-person instruction.” These changes pose a challenge for schools determining the best course of action for reopening in the fall, and how best to prioritize the safety of students.
